One-time settlement (OTS) is one of the most common ways loans are settled in India. Here is how it works and how to prepare a proposal that a lender will take seriously.

OTS vs term settlement

FactorOne-time settlement (OTS)Term settlement
PaymentSingle lump sumA few instalments over an agreed period
Lender’s viewImmediate recoveryRecovery over time, with some risk
Risk for youNeed funds upfrontMissing an instalment can cancel the deal

Before you apply: prepare your case

  • Statement of account showing the outstanding and overdue amounts.
  • Proof of hardship: termination letter, medical bills, business loss statements, salary slips showing a pay cut.
  • A list of all your debts, so the lender can see your full position.
  • Source of settlement funds, for example savings, help from family or the sale of an asset.

How to make an OTS request

Write to the lender’s collections or recovery department (and keep a copy). A simple structure:

Subject: Request for one-time settlement — loan account ending XXXX

I am unable to continue repaying this loan because of [brief reason with dates]. Supporting documents are attached. I can arrange ₹[amount] as a one-time payment by [date] towards full and final settlement of this account. I request you to consider this proposal and issue a settlement letter.

Be honest about the amount you can arrange. Offering more than you can pay, and then defaulting on the settlement, makes things worse.

Negotiating

  • Expect a counter-offer. Ask for the reasons and respond with facts, not pressure.
  • Keep all communication in writing, or follow every call with an email summary.
  • Don’t pay a “processing fee” to anyone outside the lender to get a settlement approved.

After approval

Read the sanction letter carefully against our settlement letter checklist, pay exactly as specified, and collect the No Dues Certificate. Check your credit report a couple of months later to confirm the account shows a zero balance.
